Comment:
Alfred and Jakobine are old friends that stopped by Durham, NC throughout our families lives. Always enjoyed the stories Alfred would tell. The taxi was brought to Durham where it sat for a short time from Newton Grove, NC before the delivery to New Mexico. I recall the horn was at my parents house for a short while. As a child I recall the story of Alfred and Jokobine being held prisoner. I grew up with a picture in my mind of them being held in a medieval castle. Alfred we miss you. Jakobine look forward to seeing you again. Erik

Comment:
I met Alfred in December 1998 on an impromptu crossing of the Beagle Channel, from Isla Navarino, Chile to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. I'm therefore one witness -- among many, no doubt -- who can testify to the fact that Alfred really DID make it to the ends of the earth. We'd sailed three days on a cargo ship, only to arrive in tiny Puerto Williams, Chile and find that the airport was closed, all flights were cancelled, and the next boat to the mainland didn't leave for several days. Maybe a week. There was no way back to the Argentine side -- or so we were told by the locals -- except by private sailboat, which could be arranged, if we were lucky, down at the dock. When we got to the marina, Alfred and an elderly Austrian couple were already negotiating with the only man there. Our bargaining position was not very good, so my friend and I decided to join in and split the cost 5 ways. We immediately set out in sunshine, the Argentine mountains visible on the other side. In the middle of the channel, a wild gale suddenly arose. Visibility was completely gone, the waves crashed violently over the side of the boat, and we leaned all the way into the waves, the mast nearly clipping the tops of the whitecaps as we flew. Alfred was out front, helping the overwhelmed navigator maintain control of the boat. (I wonder if this experience might have been the "tempest in southern oceans" mentioned in some of his recent obituaries.) We arrived at Puerto Almanza, Argentina, to an all-but-abandoned border checkpoint staffed by a few forgotten soldiers, and Alfred decided to make a deal to sail on with the sailboat man, just a bit closer to the end of the world. That was the last we saw of him. But we never forgot him, checking the internet every few years to see what he'd been up to. In that brief hour or two that we spent together, he told us bits and pieces of his story, invited us to his annual birthday party in Taos, and gave us a glimpse into a life lived off the beaten path. I have 6 or 8 old photos of Alfred taken in the midst of that experience that I'd be happy to share with anyone interested. I'll be very eager to see the film and to fill in the gaps that he left in the story he told that day as we recovered from the storm in Puerto Almanza. He never mentioned the taxi, so I suspect he left the best parts out. - Forrest Reid

Comment:
We met Alfred one beautiful Taos afternoon in an outdoor cafe.
He was at the table next to us and we got talking and he told us of his taxi and his (ex)wife Jakobine.
We honestly felt to meet and talk with Alfred was to fall in love again with life itself!!
Such a strong rich passion.

Everyone’s life is a journey, it is the route that the individual chooses
that makes life’s story compelling, and every journey needs a home to return to.

Comment:
I bought miles because I want to help both Alfred and Jonathan
complete their journey. I think they are driven by their hearts,
which is rare and beautiful. The taxi was a vehicle for hearts in
the past, and I want to see it reprise this role.
Roll, baby, roll!
